01 / ORIGEN

Motivashon

1958 — 2013

WILFRIDO ORTEGA · ARCHIVO LITERARIO

Tokante.

This bibliography is part of an ongoing investigation into the work of author Wilfrido Ortega. Although he has often been described as one of Curaçao’s most prolific writers, there is no complete, accessible list of everything he produced.

01 / ORIGINS

Motivation

1958 — 2013

Curaçao has other authors who sold books door to door and wrote short novels. Amador Nita, Tuyuchi, Guillermo Rosario, Nilo Kleinmoedig and Edward de Jongh are among them. One reason for this research is that Wilfrido wrote only in Papiamentu and published, illustrated and distributed his books consistently from 1958 to 2013. The lack of information about his work sparked this curiosity.

The bibliography is a tool for further research.
02 / QUESTIONS

Aims

Besides providing an overview of Wilfrido’s productivity, Nifa seeks to answer several other questions:

01

What was the value of Wilfrido Ortega’s work for the development of the Papiamentu language and literature?

02

What impact did Wilfrido’s consistency have on Curaçao’s community?

03

What can his stories tell us about life and social relations across different periods?

To explore these questions, it was necessary to compile a bibliography of Wilfrido’s publications and identify where they can be found.

03 / LEARNING

Programmes that contributed

This digital bibliography grew out of several professional development programmes in which Nifa has participated in recent years:

01

Each One Teach One

Each One Teach One, a programme of Fonds voor Cultuurparticipatie, focuses on developing editing and publishing skills. During the programme, attention was given to the publication ‘Destino di Amor’ written by Ortega.

02

Caribbean Digital Scholarship
Summer Institute

The Caribbean Digital Scholarship Summer Institute focuses on digital publishing. Among other things, the programme involved working with GitHub to present archival material. Cultuurfonds Caribisch Gebied co-financed the trip to Jamaica for Digital Caribbean as part of the Digital Connections project.
